Williamson County Schools
Williamson County is located minutes south of Nashville,
Tennessee. The school system services approximately 40,000
students through 10 high schools, 11 middle schools, 27
elementary schools, and one K-8 school. For the past five years,
the district has grown by an average of 1,067 students each
year as more and more corporations move their headquarters
to the county. WCS students consistently earn test scores
among the highest in the state. Our county-wide ACT score of
25.3 exceeds the national average of 20.3 and the state average
of 20. Ravenwood seniors averaged a 27.1 ACT score last year.
More than half of the district’s professional employees have
attained a Master’s Degree or higher.
Organization of School Year
The school year consists of two semesters, each divided into
two nine-week quarters. The day is divided into eight 50 minute
periods, with most students having six classes, one study hall,
and one homeroom/lunch period. First semester is August
through December; second semester is January through May.
Grading and Class Rank
Students earn 0.5 credit per course each semester. Full-credit
courses meet for two semesters. Transcripts reflect semester
grades only, comprised of two quarter grades and one
semester exam grade. All GPA’s are on a 4.0 weighted scale to
include 0.5 bonus quality point for our 40+ honors courses and
1.0 bonus quality point for our 20+ AP courses. Williamson
County Schools does not report class rank.
Two GPA’s appear on student’s transcript. The Cum Weighted
GPA is a student’s official GPA as calculated by the WCS Grading
Scale. The Hope Scholarship GPA is only used as one
determining factor for the Tennessee HOPE Scholarship. A
student qualifies for the HOPE Scholarship if an ACT score of
21/980 SAT or a 3.0 cumulative GPA (based on TN Uniform
Grading Scale) is earned by the end of the 12th grade year.
An averaging policy for Math, Foreign Language, Chemistry,
Physics, or Accounting courses allows students to gain full
credit even though they failed the first semester. This is
possible only if the second semester grade is a passing grade
high enough to average with the first semester to attain a 60%
or more. In these cases, the transcript will reflect the full credit
earned. Grades remain on record as earned.
