Private Lessons
12 Claremont Community School of Music
Private Lesson Process & Policy
New and current student referrals for private lessons are carefully handled by our staff, teachers, and
coordinated by the president of the CCSM Board of Directors. Careful thought is given to schedule,
availability, level, and experience when selecting a teacher/student match. It is our goal to provide the
best possible educational experience for every student enrolled in our programs.
CCSM has a three-step registration process for private lesson referrals that generally takes a week upon
submission of the referral form.
Step 1: Submit a private lesson referral at www.claremontmusic-org/Registration-and-Payments or in-
person at the school.
Step 2: A CCSM teacher will contact you to schedule lesson time as well as a start date/time and email
you a brief overview of their background, experience, qualifications, and any additional information.
Step 3: Once your lesson schedule and start date/time with the teahcer is determined, please complete
your registration by contacting the office with these details. A registrar will process the registration and
email an invoice.
Private lessons are open to new and continuing students and all lesson arrangements are made directly
with the corresponding instructor. Private lessons are available on most instruments. Suzuki instruction
is available for violin, viola, cello, guitar and piano.
Virtual Lessons: For students preferring virtural (online and not in-person) lessons, these are possible
through Zoom, Skype, or FaceTime.
Private lesson students joining CCSM for the first time will register for a four-lesson
consultation period (trial lessons). This consultation period allows the students and
teachers to get to know each other. (If a student chooses to withdraw prior to the 4th
lesson taught, a full refund will be given minus the cost of the initial given lessons.) After
this consultation period, it is expected that students will commit to weekly lessons for
the remainder of the school year (billable monthly). There are no makeups or refunds for
student-missed lessons (see page 4).
Full-term enrollment is required and pro-rated based on week of entry. Tuition payments are due on
the 1st of the month (for that immediate month) and billed monthly from September–June. A one-time
$20 student registration fee is applied to each new student account. Payments are considered late if not
received by the 10th of the month. A $25 late fee will be automatically applied to the student’s account
for past-due balances.
If you will be taking private lessons through a charter school, we must receive the purchase order/
enrichment certificate BEFORE your student will be allowed to start lessons. Please make sure to allow
plenty of time for your charter school to generate the PO and send it to us.
Sign up for Auto-Pay and avoid late fees!

Master Private Lessons
Master Teachers are available to instruct students of any age and ability who demonstrate a commitment
to serious music study. The program is open to everyone, but also includes students who are considering
career paths in the world of music or for those desiring to reach artist-level capacity on their voice or
instrument. Master teachers are our most highly qualified instructors and possess at least a Master of
Arts degree in music (or comparable certification and/or experience teaching at CCSM), widespread
performing experience at the artist level, and very strong pedagogical skills.
Master Private lessons may be taken in 30, 45, or 60 minute increments and enable students to progress
at a highly motivated pace. It gives the opportunity for advanced students to prepare for performances,
auditions and competitions. Students explore varied repertoire and are placed in demanding arenas to
accelerate their study of music.

CHAMBER MUSIC ENSEMBLES
Chamber music is a form of classical music composed for a small group of instruments—traditionally a
group that could fit in a palace chamber or large room. Most broadly, it includes any music performed by
a small number of performers, with one performer to a part.
Because of its intimate nature, chamber music has been described as “the music of friends”. Playing
chamber music requires special skills, both musical and social, that differ from the skills required for
playing solo or symphonic works. Chamber music groups at CCSM are created and coordinated based
on the number, instrumentation, and level of interested participants. Rehearsal times are based on the
availability of students and rehearsal space. On average, rehearsals and lessons occur one time per week
for approximately one hour throughout the school year. Interested students may apply by contacting the
Executive Director, Matthew Keating, directly via email at [email protected]. Concurrent
enrollment in private lessons is required.
Note: Class dates and times are determined by the Executive Director or the instructor; Inquire accordingly.

Suzuki - String & Piano
SUZUKI STRING & PIANO ORIENTATION — MANDATORY
At the Claremont Community School of Music, we are proud that we offer the Suzuki Method (“Talent
Education”) on the following instruments: violin, viola, cello, guitar, and piano. Dr. Shin’ichi Suzuki
developed this internationally adopted approach based on how all people learn, no matter whether or not
there may be challenges to how we learn. Through careful study and observation, he noticed that human
beings have a tremendous ability to observe (notice) details in their/our environment which lead to how
we learn. This exciting approach teaches everyone that ”yes, we can”. With observation, listening, and
repetition, we learn that we can play at a very high level by learning the “step-by-step” approach which
includes listening to the recordings of the music that the students will learn! Parents play a very involved
role as well.
There is a lovely video based on the book by Dr. Suzuki, “Nurtured by Love” that explains the philosophy
very well. When new families (including transfer students/families that have already taken lessons) come
into a Suzuki program, an orientation will be arranged! If you are interested in this approach, please speak
to the office or one of the Suzuki teachers. It is very important and exciting to enter into the world of the
Suzuki approach!
An orientation will be arranged through your teacher, and perhaps multiple times in the school year…
thank you for your interest!

Suzuki - String Program
SUZUKI TWINKLER VIOLIN/VIOLA CLASS
AGES 4 - 8 + PARENT/GUARDIAN
Dr. Shin’ichi Suzuki developed this incredibly exciting approach to human potential through the study of
music. He realized that babies have a very high ability to learn from birth and through the use of imitation,
humans can learn to a very high degree by the awareness of our surroundings. By using imitative skills,
we learn by listening to speech patterns that surround us. We don’t learn by someone handing us a book
and saying, “Read it!” By being read to, spoken to, and by hearing music, our cognitive skills are built to
a very high degree! When lessons begin, we learn how to move and feel the music!
Dr. Suzuki has organized repertoire that the student will learn over the course of 10 books, and each piece
introduces a technique to be mastered before moving to new pieces. The beginning student needs to know
how to hold the instrument well before placing the bow on the string for ultimate success! The students
learn techniques through the use of games, and learned repertoire is reviewed and performed with other
students who know the same pieces! As students become more advanced, they are introduced to more
advanced techniques using simpler repertoire! An important component to learning is LISTENING TO
THE REPERTOIRE, realizing how the solo instrument works with the piano or orchestra, and learning the
style of the piece as well!
The ROLE OF THE PARENT/GUARDIAN is also very important at all of the different stages of the student’s
musical development. It is with this in mind that the parent/guardian needs to understand how to work
with the student and understand what is expected. At home, you are the “home teacher” and at the lesson,
the “secretary”. Regular attendance at lessons and workshops are essential for progress. This class and
lessons are a year-long commitment.

AGES 5 AND UP
The Suzuki String Workshops are an essential part of this approach. Students learn valuable skills that will
enhance their playing ability. Over the course of the school year, there are 12 repertoire classes for students
who have completed learning the “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star Variations & Theme”. They are combined with
more advanced students through Book 2 or 3. This exposes students to repertoire they will be learning,
and various games will be used to enhance student potential. Students learn how to play well with others.
Attendance is important, and we will plan to meet in person unless otherwise advised, in which case we will
meet virtually.
The 3 Performance Workshops are designed to give students the opportunity to “practice” solos that they’ll
perform in a school recital and for the Twinkler students to perform as a group. Also included are very
enjoyable games that enhance students’ abilities to play dynamically, emphasize style, and learn different
types of bowing, including pizzicato! This class is a year-long commitment in conjunction with private
lessons.

AGES 5 AND UP
The String Performance Workshops are part of the Suzuki String (Violin & Viola) Program. The Performance
Workshops are designed to help students achieve comfort in playing solos or duets in front of an audience.
The informal class setting helps students develop skills for success! As a student that was very fearful of
playing a solo in front of an audience, Ms. Tajima had her moments of trembling knees (of course no one
could tell) and after her performance many came up to congratulate her, and all she could think to respond
was “You didn’t see how my knees were shaking?”
This class serves to learn how to overcome the nervous stage! If there are any students that cannot participate
in the Twinkler or Watch Us Grow! Repertoire Classes, they are expected to register for this class, which
meets 3 times over the course of the year.

Suzuki - String Program
STEM A: STRING THEORY, EAR TRAINING, ENSEMBLE, MASTERCLASS
AGES 10 - 13
The STEM A Program is for advancing violinists and violists, 10-13 years old, at the Intermediate level
(Suzuki Books 2-4; CM 2-4). During this 11-session program, students will learn about more advanced
theory (major and minor keys, building chords/arpeggios, and intervals). Students will also practice sight
reading, ear training, and musical style of repertoire, including the interpretation of the repertoire. Two topics
will usually be covered each session, including theory.
Attendance and diligence in studying what was covered in class is very important. If students do not
complete the homework or take time to study what has been assigned, the class and the individual student
falls back. If you, the student, has a question, please DO NOT BE HESITANT TO ASK IT! DO NOT SAY
THAT YOU DON’T KNOW HOW TO ASK IT…we learn so much by asking, and if we are fearful of saying the
incorrect answer, we let ourselves down. There is NO SUCH THING AS A SILLY QUESTION!
During the masterclass sessions, by listening and watching, our comments help each other understand
how the music is coming across to the audience! We may think we know but really don’t. Video cameras are
also useful! By video-recording students, students can see their posture, including what the bow is doing
to help or hinder them. Masterclasses are wonderful for students to receive feedback on how they present
themselves in a performance!

AGES 13 - 16
The STEM B Program is for advancing violinists and violists, 13-16 years old, at the Intermediate/Advanced
levels (Suzuki Book 4-7; CM 5-7). During this 11-session program, students will learn about more
advanced theory (major and minor keys, inversions, building chords/arpeggios, and intervals). Students
will also practice sight reading, ear training, and musical style of repertoire, including the interpretation of
the repertoire. Two topics, including theory, will usually be covered each session.

STEM C: STRING THEORY, EAR TRAINING, ENSEMBLE, MASTERCLASS
AGES 13 - 17
The STEM C Program is designed to give the advanced student the knowledge necessary to become a
competent performer, while being able to spend more time learning about theory, music history, and ear
training. The C Session consists of students around CM levels 8-10. We will cover two topics almost every
session. There is homework that needs to be completed between sessions. If there are questions, please be
sure to ask!
During the masterclasses, students will critique each other’s performances, whether it is part of a piece,
something being prepared for an upcoming recital or evaluation, or something the student has learned in
the past. Several designated sessions will be performed with an accompanist, and the entire work can be
critiqued. This format gives students the opportunity to become acquainted with different styles of music
while broadening their understanding of music, whether familiar with a composer being performed or not!
Theory study will be included in most of the sessions, and a few will include ear training. It is critically
important that students understand basic theory and music history. If a student has not made the time to
study thoroughly and learn the material assigned, it slows down both the individual student’s progress and
that of the entire class. Being on top of each assignment for EVERY CLASS IS IMPERATIVE!

Most of our members consider themselves intermediate-level players, although any level of player is
welcome. Vocalists are also appreciated!
We perform in public a few times a year at venues including the Claremont Folk Music Center, the Jurupa

Possible New Class in Spring
What is Scottish Music?
If you’ve watched the “Outlander” series, or older movies like “Highlander”, “Braveheart”, or
“Trainspotting” you’ve heard some Scottish music. But what makes Scottish music Scottish? Did you
know Auld Lang Syne is a Scottish song?
You can find sheet music of Scottish tunes, but unless you’ve actually heard the music, you will not be
able to replicate the sound and feel of it by simply playing the notes (or “dots” as we say in the folk world)
written on the page.
For example, three types of Scottish dance tunes are written in 4/4 time: Hornpipes, Strathspeys and
Reels. But they all have a very distinct and different feel. Marches can also be in 4/4 ... or 2/4, or 6/8.
But what makes them a march if they’re in different time signatures? The same with Airs, they can also
be written in different time signatures. And Airs, although the slowest of all, are actually the most difficult
to play well.
In this four-part series, you’ll not only learn how to play different styles of Scottish music, but also learn
to use your ear, which is essential.
This workshop series will be taught by Aedan MacDonnell. Aedan has been studying, playing and
performing Celtic music since 1985. She has recorded for “Outlander,” worked with Warner Bros., and is
the founder and director of the Harp Glen at the Seaside Highland Games from 2012-2024.
OPEN TO ALL INSTRUMENTS!
If you’re interested, please email Aedan MacDonnell at [email protected].
The workshop will most likely be presented Spring 2025 and is contingent upon at least
five people enrolling.
