Firearms Registry
We've had 87,906 firearms and firearms
parts registered by 17,381 firearms licence
holders.
Remember, the first time you have an
activating circumstance you are required
to record all arms items in your
possession. You also need to check your
firearms licence holder details are
complete and up to date.
You can find information here about
activating circumstances and ongoing
events. You can also or give our helpful
registry team a call on 0800 844 431.
Purchasing firearms from a retailer
If you're getting a new firearm this
summer, here's a handy checklist:
Check your firearms licence is up-
to-date
Register new firearm
Register all your firearms within 30
days
Keep your details up-to-date
If you have recently bought a firearm
from a retailer it is likely they will have
filled out some online forms with you in
store at the time of the sale. Please note,
this does not mean you have filled in the
Registry, and you will still need to record
all your arms items and check your details
are up to date.
Head to firearmssafetyauthority.govt.nz to register online or give us a call on 0800 844 431
Monday to Friday 8.30am-5pm, except public holidays. We're here to help.

Updated firearms safety test for licence holders
reapplying for a licence ('renewal')
A lot has changed in the last 10 years. Since 2013, there have been nine changes to Firearms
Regulations and six changes to the Arms Act. Some licence holders may not be aware of
changes to Regulations or the Arms Act that will have an impact on their safety, storage,
transport, and general obligations.
When a licence holder applies for a new licence (renews), we need to be sure our licence
holders are using firearms safely, within the rules in the current Arms Act and Regulations.
A new 20-question firearms safety test is being applied
during vetting meetings from November, with all licence
holders renewing. The new firearms safety test for
‘renewals’ replaces the old 10-question test and is based on
current licence holder obligations.
We would like to thank Firearms Community Advisory
Forum, Ministers Arms Advisory Group and Arms
Engagement Group for their input and endorsement of the
new safety test.
Firearms safety videos
The seven rules and immediate supervision while hunting now feature on film.
Whether you’re new to shooting, or have been shooting your whole life - safety isn’t just a
choice; it’s a responsibility. By following the 7 safety rules, you’re not only protecting your
firearms but protecting yourself and others around you.
A huge thank you to the team at NZ Hunter, and our crew Josh, Nick and Shane for working
with us on this series. These videos were filmed out in the South Wairarapa. Since the videos
were released, they have been viewed more than 91,400 times.
Check out Rule 1 below, Treat every firearm as loaded, and find the full series here.
