First time applicants will also need to complete a firearms
safety course with NZMSC (New Zealand Mountain Safety
Council) as outlined in the ‘Arms Code’
Licence renewal applicants will also need to complete the
multiple choice safety test on the back of this form
2 Attach your application fee receipt
Fees are payable at a PostShop (fees can be obtained by
contacting your nearest Police Station or online at:
www.police.govt.nz/service/firearms)
3 Provide two recent colour passport photos
Photo requirements can be found online at:

4 Deliver your application to Police
You can deliver it to your nearest Police Station or post
to your nearest Arms Officer (Arms Officer details can be
obtained by contacting your nearest Police Station or online at:

A background check will be carried out.
A vetting officer will contact the applicant to arrange
an interview and complete a security check.
A vetting officer will interview the applicants referees.
What else you need to do ...
You will need to have a good understanding of
the 'Arms Code' and what is required of you to
use a firearm.
You will need to provide a safe and secure place
to store your firearms (see the 'Arms Code').
The 'Arms Code' forms the basis of the
Firearms Safety Test which must be sat by
all firearms licence applicants.
You can pick up the ‘Arms Code’ from a Police Station,
request one to be sent to you or download it online at:

Renewal of Firearms Licence – Safety Test
If you are renewing your firearms licence you are required to complete the multiple choice safety test set out below.
Answer all of the questions below carefully and clearly mark your answer like this or
